Background of the Study

Stroke remains a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, with a high prevalence in Nigeria (World Stroke Organization [WSO], 2024). Post-stroke rehabilitation is essential for improving motor function, speech, cognitive abilities, and overall quality of life. Cardiac nurses play a significant role in stroke rehabilitation by providing patient education, monitoring cardiovascular health, and assisting with physical rehabilitation exercises (Adeyemi & Bassey, 2023).

In Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, post-stroke rehabilitation often involves a multidisciplinary team, with nurses at the frontline of patient care. However, the specific contributions of cardiac nurses to rehabilitation outcomes remain underexplored. This study aims to assess the role of cardiac nurses in post-stroke rehabilitation and their impact on patient recovery.

Statement of the Problem

Many stroke patients in Nigeria experience prolonged disability due to inadequate rehabilitation services and poor cardiovascular management (Olumide et al., 2024). While cardiac nurses have the expertise to support post-stroke recovery, their role is often underutilized due to institutional constraints and limited resources (Eze & Ogunleye, 2023). This study seeks to evaluate how cardiac nurses contribute to post-stroke rehabilitation and identify potential gaps in their involvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of cardiac nurses in post-stroke rehabilitation.
  2. To evaluate the impact of cardiac nurses' interventions on stroke recovery outcomes.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the involvement of cardiac nurses in post-stroke rehabilitation.

Research Questions

  1. What role do cardiac nurses play in post-stroke rehabilitation at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa?
  2. How do cardiac nurses' interventions impact stroke recovery and rehabilitation outcomes?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the contribution of cardiac nurses to post-stroke rehabilitation?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Cardiac nurses play a significant role in improving rehabilitation outcomes for stroke patients.
  2. Stroke patients who receive care from cardiac nurses have better recovery rates compared to those without such care.
  3. Challenges such as inadequate training and resource constraints limit the effectiveness of cardiac nurses in post-stroke rehabilitation.
